We've developed a couple web applications that use JDBC and Domino to
provide extranet applications for customers. Order inquiry, stock level
inquiry, price inquiry, order entry, etc...

The Domino server runs on the same iSeries as the green screen application
and accesses the live DB2 physical and logical files. Performance has
been excellent, accessing order history data from a PF with 800K records
is typically 1 second or less. It definitely took an investment of time
to learn Java and apply it to Domino, but these applications have been
running for 2+ years with no hiccups. There are many sites that have
sample code, the IBM Java Toolbox for iSeries is where I started and after
some trial and error we got it working.

Glad to provide sample code to anyone...

Bob

Re: DB2 With Domino 8

I am a big fan on running domino on the iSeries. We used to run domino on
windows based servers and it was a big headache.
Unfortunately, with out direct native (iSeries db2 database access) the
product will be relegated to a mail and calendaring platform.
Early on, (several years ago) we developed a web-based application on the
iSeries using LSX and it was very clunky, hard to change and was not very
robust (inquiry only). We do still use LSX and ODBC for batch oriented
uploads of data to DB2. We quickly realized that domino development
(accessing iSeries DB2 applications) was not going to be platform for the
future web based development, (at least on the iSeries)

We were hoping to take a fresh look at it when ND8 provided native access.

Anybody have any insight to why the change in direction?

Re: DB2 With Domino 8

I agree that LEI/DECS are not tools to build fully functional applications

around.

We have used JDBC to move data back/forth between Domino and iSeries DB2
and that works well.

Being able to store data directly in DB2 tables is where we should be
heading though. Unfortunate decision by IBM and the Domino blog mentions
that the IBM iSeries crowd bought into that decision -- it would be nice
to hear from the iSeries side to hear the reasons. If DB2 UDB on the
iSeries is drastically different that DB2 on other platforms I can
understand why DB2 implementation on the iSeries is delayed -- but at
least provide a statement of direction...

Also, just wanted to comment; I too am concerned that the iSeries platform

is
being shunned. "Other important database work???? Work arounds include
LEI/DEC?"
We tried using these so called tools and in my opion you can not build
solid
bullet proof applications with work-around tools.

Bob, I'm not sure how I missed that one (since I have that in my RSS
reader...). I'm going to throw in my 2cents now.

Thanks - glad to have some official word.

I believe DB2 was always intended for applications (whether stated or
not).
You're probably right about 8.0.1.

I thought that I heard, and I am probably wrong, that DB2 integration
won't be out until 8.0.1. And even then, it isn't for mail files, but
rather for applications.

I could be wrong, though.
