An even better example is the American Civil War. The North defeated the
South and then imposed its will on the South. We are still regretting
the results of that decision.

WWI was fought and finished the way you suggest, less than a generation
later we were back doing the job all over.
WWI was fought and finished in a very different manner and 60+ years
later the entire Axis has never again waged war.
Plan B seems to be the more successful result, doesn't it?

It's important to have a sensible foreign policy, where we only go to
war when our own Congress deliberates and declares the war. Then go in
full blast with Americans united, make mincemeat of the enemy and then
get out. Nation-building is not necessary, you just teach them a lesson
and let them build their own nation, because that way they'll do better.
Foreign aid is robbing the poor in rich countries to give to the rich in
poor countries.
