There are two 2oth Century examples that seem like teaching moments for
us all: WWI and WWII.
WWI was fought and finished the way you suggest, less than a generation
later we were back doing the job all over.
WWI was fought and finished in a very different manner and 60+ years
later the entire Axis has never again waged war.
Plan B seems to be the more successful result, doesn't it?

It's important to have a sensible foreign policy, where we only go to
war when our own Congress deliberates and declares the war. Then go in
