??? You don't believe the housing bubble bursting had anything to do
with it?

hmmmm...

I am more or less with you on the notion that these high prices suck all
the "extra" out of every family and small business in America, leaving
nothing for discretionary spending.

That puts a real hurt on the economy, but still, the Great Recession was
way more than a normal recession. Losing your house, foreclosure, and
moving back with the folks is what put the real fear in the hearts, in
my opinion. We have had oil shocks before without having the
destruction and fear caused by this Great Recession.

Maybe so, but that is what scared people so bad that they quit spending
and
started staying home and saving as much as possible. It has taken years
for
people to forget about that. It is now happening again. IMO.

The economy was already in free fall by then.

It was $4.12 in the summer of 2008. How conveniently we forget.

The ever helpful media jump on Newt's claim, not knowing what the hell
he's talking about.
which just goes to prove his point - followers of conservative media
all knew that Obama voted 4 times in the Illinois legislature to allow
infanticide for abortion survivors, but mainstream media would rather
you didn't know, and never asked him about it.

the commenters at that politico story show exactly what I mean - the
obama backing media want the national conversation to be about
religion, contraception and abortion, because if it's about the
economy, Obama loses big.
