Why do I "drive by" ? Because Dick does!
Most times the topic is political.
My "drive-by" posts are almost always aimed at Dick. IMO, the majority of
Dick's OP's are drive-bys - one or two sentences, rarely even a full
paragraph, with NO attribution: no link to an article, rarely a reference
to who even wrote or said what he is posting.
To Dick, Republicans/conservative viewpoints are evil - they're killing the
old people, starving the poor people, putting people out of their jobs, etc.
To Dick, Democrats are the saviors of the world - they help the little guy,
increase entitlements, etc.
What Dick doesn't and will never acknowledge is that most /politicians/
(regardless of their stripes) tend toward corrupt, in my humble opinion.
"All power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely."

I was a little surprised that no one chimed in. The point of this was
to start a discussion on the nature of the list. I read a very
thought provoking post regarding drive by commenters. It made me
think about it anyway. What is a drive by comment? Short? No
value-add? Insulting? Unpleasant? It's not easy to objectively
ascertain what qualities a post might need in order to fit the idea of
a drive by, shooting up the discussion. How about some bore who types
a metric assload of words when a few will do? (Alan: this is
self-referential. Not all long posts are written by bores.)
It seems to me that there is more than one drive by commenter here.
Of course I no longer read every post, so my view is necessarily
skewed. A pseudorandom sampling shows a propensity for short posts,
very few compliments and a lot of personal insults. That seems to be
a reasonable definition of drive by. Which seems to indicate to this
reader that drive bys aren't shutting down discussion on this list.
They ARE the discussion on this list.
