Moderator

I didn't realise we had a moderator.

In all seriousness, how does one moderate a completely open discussion
list? Don't get me wrong, I'm all in favour of civility! I always
thought that this list had no rules except the informal 'keep System i
traffic on the main lists' in order to help the most people there.
This list was reformed and opened up specifically to allow discussion
of controversial topics, and I don't recall a moderator stepping in
when the discussions became personal.

I may completely misunderstand the underlying basis of the list (it
won't be my first major malfunction) but isn't the general idea that
one replies to what one is interested in, and one refrains when one is
disinterested? The list is self-moderating, or supposed to be. I
never participate in American football threads because I am both
ignorant and uninterested. I participate in the illegal alien threads
because I am ignorant and quite interested. What better way to learn?

Well. I guess I'm curious as to the role of a moderator here. What
does the list think a moderator ought to be doing?

I think the moderator ought to deny spam postings.
