Why is having the plan through a former employer more portable than
having the plan directly, with grace periods, etc.?

So?? What is the benefit to anyone of what you propose? Why not just
require insurers to carry the person as an individual? nbd.

And you have to pay 100% of the premium, your share plus the employer's
share.

?? Would you expect Employer A to continue the subsidies he paid when
the person worked there?
btw COBRA does what you suggest, more or less.

The U.S. spends more per capita on health care than any other country in
the world, yet our health outcomes are at the bottom of the heap among
the industrialized world. Does that sound like what's best for the
system, our children, the country as a whole, and the greatest number of
its citizens? Take the blinders off, Rick, and acknowledge that the
current system is broken.
You say that democrats simply ask, "What's in it for me?"
People like you, however, are proud to say, "I've got mine, so screw
everyone else."
I view universal basic health care as an obligation that government must
assume sooner or later, preferably sooner. Conservatives will be
dragged, as they always have been, kicking and screaming into the 21st
century. Not only is it the right thing to do, it's going to be an
absolute necessity if our industries are to remain competitive globally
with those in countries where they are not burdened with exorbitant
private employee health insurance costs.
Further, I view universal health care as one of the most liberating
programs for individual growth and freedom. Individuals could market
their skills without regard to a lapse in health insurance, take a
year's sabbatical if they so chose, retire early without having to wait
for Medicare to kick in at 65.
It's an idea whose time has come. This is a battle that you and your
fellow libertarians/conservatives are not going to win.

Shorter boofy: Rick and Paul are lucky, they survived life

paying that premium for high deductable catastrophic insurance.
The bottom line is that Paul and I are only interested in what's best
for the system, our children, the country as a whole, and the greatest
number of it's citizens. Boofy, like most democrats, is only
interested in "what's in it for me?"

Its easy to be a pompous bastard when you can afford it, Paul.
Half of America is below average and didn't have big inheritances and
plum jobs, like some.

A few people close to me are, yes. Not me. However I am high risk
and
uninsurable at regular rates for other reasons.
So, the Republican Plan would leave Rick and me uninsured. Rick
doesn't
care, but I do,

So.. please explain what you want to do, Paul?
My own reaction is that if you can ride the illegals wagon into a
discussion of health care, then probably talking about cancer
survivors
isn't really off topic, either?

"... Republicans want to expand the existing private insurance
system,
offering new tax breaks as a way of helping people buy insurance
individually. But they also want to avoid federal regulation that
would
tell insurers whom they have to cover and how much they may charge.
That means the self-employed and others seeking individual coverage
would be subject to a marketplace in which insurers generally pick
the
healthiest applicants and turn the rest away. Cancer survivors --
even
if they have been free of disease for several years -- are
routinely
denied health insurance when they try to purchase it as
individuals.
