She was appointed by somebody in the Clinton administration. One does not
get that type of appointment without some political grease.

While she may have had good academic credentials, and was a loyal foot
soldier for the GOP, she was apparently lacking in management experience
(I"m being very polite here) and common sense. She was appointed
because she was a staunch conservative above all else.
I can find no reference anywhere to show who appointed her as Assistant
US attorney. Just because it was during the Clinton years does not mean
that the administration had anything to do with her appointment. The US
Attorneys can appoint their own assistants, as can other designated
officials.
