I see what you are driving at now Tom (no pun intended) and agree. For proof
of how that can happen just look at our Social Security Number...

Chuck:
Yeah, I know. I'm just emphasizing that focus is needed. There are
multiple problems related to DLs; and "immigration", illegal or legal,
shouldn't be one of them.
A DL should either be a DL or it should be something else, something
more. If it's evidence of driving ability and nothing more, then far
fewer would care who has one; and that's the only thing it should be.
But it becomes entangled with other issues because we're allowing DLs to
be some far reaching 'object' that empowers privileges that have nothing
to do with driving ability. Privileges are available almost solely based
upon the possession of this magical 'object'.
The more we allow that to happen, the more that possession of a DL opens
doors that should be left closed. The DL becomes a key that can be used
in dangerous ways.
A hundred million Americans might be upset about illegal aliens (/not/
"immigrants"). If attention keeps swinging off on tangents, effort is
diluted.
Set a garden hose nozzle to spray a mist and aim at an anthill -- the
anthill gets wet. Focus the stream and the anthill gets blasted.
I'm reminding us to stay focused.
