Yes, in their regional offices around the world. Unbeknownst to the group
that was retrofitting the international software to be used in the corporate
offices, the mainframers, in conjunction with IBM Global Services, funded a
project to have IGS retrofit the mainframe code to make it Y2K compliant.
IGS brought over 120 Indians and put them into an apartment building wired
to the McDonald's HQ. Nobody ever saw them. The women in that group also had
to cook and clean for the men. Their food was delivered from markets in the
Indian neighborhoods of Chicago.
At the end of the 2 year project, 6 weeks before the rollout of the System i
stuff, the CIO announced that the mainframe software had been retrofitted
and would be kept. Everybody on the System i project was thanked and sent
home.
I called my broker and told him to get rid of my shares in McDonalds. We did
the project for $35 million. IBM GS was paid $70 million. The CIO was
rewarded with a new BMW because he had come in $15 million under his
original budget! Unbelievable.
