Re: Some stupid people are just scary

Duane,

Thanks for the response. I've never had a strong opinion on it one way or
another, but I always leaned against it. I never realized that the eye for
an eye would be considered old law until this conversation. I'll keep that
in mind the next time Paul brags about another Texas execution. :)

Mike,

A Christian can't use the bible to justify killing someone, just as you
can't use "move" in /free RPGIV, eye for an eye is old law. You can
inprison
that person for the rest of their life but you must treat them humainly.

Personally I am against the death penalty for several reasons besides my
Christian values. It costs more to put someone to death than to keep them
in
prision for life and it is not a deterrant to other criminals.

That being said, if someone molested or killed my kids or girlfriend and I
"got" to them before the police I honestly don't know what I would do. But
I
would accept the punishment I deserved.

Daune,

... not that I want to change the subject or anything, but I am really
interested in what your (or others') response to this would be.

How does the death penalty fit into the new "manual"? I've heard people
on
the list use the "eye for an eye (exodus)" as justification for it, but in
my opinion it seems to go against Christ's teachings ("Let he who is
without
sin cast the first stone.") If we are to use Christ's teachings as the
new
law, why are we still executing people and using the bible to justify
it?**

To me it is a historical document, just like the old RPGIII manual. The

The old law is replace by the new commandments, Love the Lord your God
with
all your mind, heart, soul, and love your neighbor as yourself. Anything
from the old testament (or anywhere else for that matter) that disagrees
with these commandments is overridden.

Most of the old laws (10 commandments specifically) are fully inline
with
the the new commandments, thus Christ had no problem "following" them.
But
he broke others ("working" on the Sabbath comes to mind) that where not.

Sorry have to run, would love to spend a few more minutes on this.

Second, the old testament is like that S/36, or RPGIII manual lying in
the
bottom of a drawer in your desk. Christians are not bound to the
covenant
of
the law (old testament) (nor is anyone else) but are bound in the new
covenant with Christ.

Why not? Matthew 5:17 tells us that Christ came to fulfil the Law.
Christ Himself didn't seem averse to obeying the Old Testament. I
agree that he _added_ to it with '...this is the New Covenant...' So
do you then feel that the Old Testament is a historical document
alone? No tricks, I promise. Just honestly wondering how you feel
about it.
