Gas has always been cheaper than electric for me. It got way cheaper when
Illinois jacked up the electric rates at ComEd's request.
Plus, gas is more environmentally friendly. They use coal to make
electricity in most of the Midwest.

Paul,
Is a gas house cheaper to heat than an electric? My wife and I are in the
middle of buying a new house with gas heat, and were kind of worried about
the costs of gas. We've always had electric heat in our apartments, so we
weren't sure what to expect as far as costs. We've had friends who talk
about how outrageous their winter gas bills were.
If gas is cheaper, I'm kind of surprised.

Do you heat your house with natural gas?
Gas water heaters are not that expensive to install, especially if you can
run the pipe yourself and have basic skills. If you don't, you can do most
of the work, and then get a plumber to do a side job for you.
We don't have gas here, but I'm thinking about putting in a propane tank,
especially since I've got the room on this lot.
Tankless is good to augment the regular heater, but I would not recommend
them to be your primary source of hot water. Especially if you have people
in your house who like long showers. Been there, done that.

Anyone have any personal experience with on-demand (tankless) water
heaters?
Know someone who has?
Our electric water heater is 13 years old, one of the burners had to be
replaced last summer and I think it's only a matter of time. I'd rather
decide and do something before it dies.
The thoughts running through my head are:
- Gas is supposed to be cheaper to operate than electric, but is more
expensive to install
- Tankless is supposed to be cheaper to operate than tanks, but is more
expensive to install
- I've heard horror stories on tankless not meeting demand, but they can
be
installed in tandem
- Gas requires venting, but tankless can be installed outside, but then
they
need freeze protection
- Super efficient water heaters qualify for $300 tax rebate if installed
by
12/31
- The gas company (Nipsco) will give me a $50 rebate to install a gas
water
heater
- An online calculator indicates I will save $142/year by switching to gas
(that's from an electric utility's website)
