Out municipal water here is pumped out of Lake Champlain, and very
heavily chlorinated. We are thinking of installing a water softener,
but it's not cheap ($3000+). We drink mostly bottled water. But the
worst tap water I have seen in this country is in Phoenix.

I beg to differ with you, Paul. Chicago's water is heavily

have to drink
bottled water.

Amongst the yuppies. Chicago's water comes straight out of
Lake Michigan,
and after going through the normal water plant operations,
it ranks at or
near the top of the municipal water systems in the country.

What the yups don't often know is that a lot of the
bottled water they
consume is nothing more than tap water in a fancy bottle.

I once had a bottled water client in the SFO area. When I
toured their
facility, I was surprised to learn that their water flowed
through a pipe
drilled into the side of the mountain next to the building.

Heard a segment on NPR about NY City's tap water. It's very good
stuff, but apparently the newer generations aren't interested in
drinking it. The city has started an ad campaign to show off their
water and encourage New Yorkers to drink it... after all, they paid
for it!

I have always consumed my local tap water. No filters or other
modifications - from the municipal supply straight to my
glass. Our
water comes from a deep aquifer which is recharged in the
foothills of
the Adirondack Mountains.

I'm curious though. Is drinking bottled water common?
