Re: Finally, my Senator speaks for me.

I hate to chime in this late in the game, but the eight were fired
for political reasons, not performance and there is no evidence they were
asked to perform illegal acts. They are, in fact "AT WILL" employees of the
Justice Department and serve at the pleasure of the President. While the
Justice Department is not supposed to be political, it is no secret that it
has been "backhandedly" political for a long time. The law prior to the
"Patriot Act" was that all US Attorneys were appointed by the President and
confirmed by the Senate. Until it expires, the AG can ask for the
resignations of any or all US Attorneys and appoint whomever the President
wants to appoint.
I very rarely say bad things about a person, just about their
actions. In this case, Mr. Gonzales is so grossly incompetent and stupid to
understand what the office of the AG is for, how it works and that it is not
political that he was bound to screw it up. They asked for the resignations
because they had other people to appoint. Gonzales was asked in a news
conference about it and he stated that they were fired for performance
issues. They were not. They were fired for political reasons. Instead of
coming out and saying I was wrong when I said that, he has attempted to say
that he was responsible, but didn't know about it being political.

He's just stupid, not criminal.

John Brandt

PS: To answer why did all those AG's get fired under Clinton?

When a new President takes office, normally the acting Attorney
General asks for the resignation of all 93 US Attorneys and subsequently
appoints his own, based on Senate confirmation. If a President is elected
for a second term, most AG's customarily ask for the resignation of all 93
US Attorneys and accept only those they wish to replace, followed by new
appointments and Senate confirmations.
The "Patriot Act" changed the law so that the US Attorney
appointments no longer were required to be confirmed by the Senate. This was
GW's way of using the bully pulpit to appoint those he wanted and fire those
who were pursuing Republicans for corruption, his friends for corporate
corruption, monopolies, or not pursuing Democrats vigorously enough. This
part of the Patriot Act has not been renewed.

Sure I will put it in a nut shell for you.

Eight people got fired because they "performed badly". In fact they were
fired because they refused to do illegal acts , as ordered by the White
House. Now, to add to the mess, the top law enforcement person in the land
has lied about the matter, and lied repeatedly. In short, it is clear that
GW and his team just do not understand what they have done. They are not
taking responsibility for their actions, and are trying to frame the issue
as an "at-will" employment issue, which it is not.

Can anyone put this in a nutshell w/out many paragraphs?

When slick willie was prez he fired all AG's (90 or so, I think).
What's the
problem w/gonzo? Did he simply lie about his knowledge/involvement in this?
