Re: Is death a requirement of the universe?

That corollary would be that the computer could also drain our brain? Same question: Would that make life better or worse?

Booth,

Interesting question. I envision, in the not too distant future, when they will
be able to hook our brains directly to computers and we can learn things
instantly. Will that make life better or worse?

I can not imagine happiness without work, strife, victory, and sweat.
It'd just be bland and pale, no excitement.

Would the thrill of learning to tie your own shoes be anywhere near as
wonderful if we hadn't had to struggle so to get it right?

(Rick, keep at it. It'll come. We're all pulling for you.)

I just don't see how anyone can reconcile the idea that strife is necessary for life on earth but not when you get to heaven. What am I missing? I don't beleive in heaven so I don't have a problem but perhaps someone who does can explain it for me.

ah, the Eternal Question. Is the Hamster Wheel necessary to human
happiness?

Booth,

That may have been true in the past but is it still necesssary?

I didn't mean that the artist must be tormented. I was trying to say
that the species would not advance if there was no discomfort & unrest.
Would we, as a species, be any more developed than a cow if we had no
natural enemies, no pain, no illness, no famine? The Four Horsemen of
the Apocalypse would be on foot, singing gay tunes.

You mention music as a pleasure.
A musician's weakness and vanity.

I keep going back to Bessie the Cow.
Hm! :-)

If we were as contented as Bessie,
as a species, would we have ever
developed music? I ask because I am
unaware of any great Cow Ensembles;
most are just run of the mill.
The 'tormented artist' is a relatively recent model. Bach was quite
comfortable. I don't think that tormenting cows will inspire them to
ever greater compositions than they undertake today.
