Somewhere around 70% as illustrated in the following web pages.

There are 2 separate taxes on gasoline or petrol as we call it here. First
there is fuel duty, then there is VAT or Value Added Tax which is levied at
17.5% on the pre-VAT price including fuel duty. So a large part of the VAT
is actually a tax on a tax.

how much of that is taxes?

Paul,

As far as public transportation, they have much less area to cover.
if you looked at the Boston to Philly to New Jersey area, you'd be
comparable size, and probably comparable public trans system.

It's when you get to the larger states, with less population and more
area to cover is when the public trans gets spotty.
