One more reply (then I'm done too.........)

Why are we getting hung up on the degree? 95% of my clients do not, have not and never will require a degree.

A majority of them always require something specific:

A particular business understanding.
A particular tool/language/package.
A certain professional history/management skill that you will only have gained through experience.
Specific salary requirements or no relo.

The list of things some clients have "required" goes on and on.

The comment about the HR department makes the argument for me. I'll bet
there are lots of "gunslingers" out there who can't get the first
interview because they lack a degree for one reason or another. Some of
the best P/A's I know don't have a sheepskin. It's got to frustrating for
you to deal with the HR departments.

End of thread for me.

I am not here to pick apart every job posting. You know how "hopeful" HR
departments can be.

I'll let this topic go with my summary: There are many jobs available.

Look very carefully at all of the requirements for this RPG programmer
opportunity near my home. How many RPG programmers with 2 to 5 years
experience have 5 or more years experience programming in PHP, etc.? Any
bets on the pay scale?

Sorry to disagree Paul - but I don't think having specific requirements
in

order to be hired equates to "walking on water".........

Yes - the 90s were great. If you were in the I.T. field all you had to
do

was sign up. Companies spent untold billions in payroll hiring people
just
in case they were needed. Remember "stay on" bonuses? I do. Companies
paid people TO NOT LEAVE. Unbelievable.

Well now companies are a little more particular about what their salary
dollars are paying for.

I don't see anyything wrong with that.

OK, but what if one has 20 years experience in ops, but no BS degree?
Do
they stand a chance of getting an interview? A lot of the job ads I see
are looking for someone who walks on water, but the pay is geared for
someone who swims like a rock.

Re: [Consult400] ...many MANY jobs go unfilled....?

I am aware of 6 full time jobs that are open right now. Each have
their
own
particular criteria - as in - they aren't simply hiring the first
person
who
say "OK, I'll do it......." rather they are expecting certain
backgrounds.

These requirments are not anything out of the ordinary.

One job requires knowledge of web-based tools combined with AS400. One
requires a BS degree AND ops background. Another position is expecting
a
specific package (JDE) while the others are looking for things
particular
to
their needs.

So to summarize - there are plenty of jobs out here.

Some members of these lists are forever stuck in 2002.

Can we give this a rest? I'd rather not have to unsubscribe to this

this............

When a woman is pregnant, fire her. Do not hire young married
women.

Its cheaper.

Careful what you say about the young. Had a gal here back when we

because
she was, well, older. That ageism disgusted me so I tartly
replied back
to the gal "at least she won't be getting pregnant". That's what
really
costs. Like the fellow here who's wife used fertility treatments
and
gave
birth to triplets, the biggest weighing 2 pounds. The costs there
make
open heart surgery look simply like a bill for lunch at McDonalds.

Are we allowed to discriminate against the young (not that I'm
advocating
it)? After all, Article II, Section 1, line 4 of the US
Constitution
forbids anyone under the age of 35 from becoming president.
