Usually the non-compete agreement is signed when you start work for a company. I've been shocked a few times at the restrictions some companies put on employees.

I worked for CTG in the 90's, and I thought that their non-compete agreement was quite fair. As I recall, it basically said that you couldn't go to work for a client you had been assigned to, for 6 months after the assignment was over. It was primarily to prevent raiding of employees by both the consulting firm and the client, because a similar clause was included in the customer contract, and bound both companies from raiding the other's employees.
