The best text I've seen on COBOL/400 is probably "Programming in 
COBOL/400" by James Cooper, et al  ISBN: 0471418463  It retails for around $90, 
but if you search you should be 
able to get it for $60-$70.  (If you need a decent search engine, try 
mysimon.com -- I use their Advanced Book Search page and usually find the 
results quite helpful.

I don't have the exact title or ISBN, but there was a book about 
specifically about programming subfiles using COBOL/400.  I don't even 
know if it's available anymore.  (I've never seen that one, but I heard it 
is, or at least was, pretty good.)

You can search the archives here for help and there's also a COBOL forum
