Not true. Renaming was possible in RPG III. See the I spec.

Technically, yes, in RPG they all have to be unique, but only in the
program. Externally they can still be the same names between files. The
Prefix option in RPG IV will alter the names in the file's format, much the
same as the Replacing clause of the Copy statement in COBOL. And I believe
the renaming option for a field is still available, although I have not used
it for a long time now.
