OK, so I wasn't off the mark in my email.
BTW, I usually use precompiler directive to pull in these data structures
from the underlying physical files, but not always.

External data structure is a struct who's layout would be defined by a
physical file (external to the program).  If the physical file layout
changed, the program would need to be recompiled to pick up the new
layout for the struct.
