My experience today reveals that using file descriptor I/O is absolutely, ridiculously awful. Two small, otherwise identical programs doing the same I/O but one using file descriptors (i.e. open(), read()) and the other using file pointers (i.e. fopen(), fread()). The file descriptor program was more than 10 times slower.
