I'm trying to port tifflib and tiff2pdf and to make the simplest changes to
make easier any update for future releases.

I agree with Steeve, but because this code compiles fine on other platforms
I was wondering what's wrong here.

There are some other problems with writing constants and dirty buffers. . .
but this will be posted separately.
