How about invokiing programs written in C from programs written in C, ie, from system or spawn(p)?

Also this does not seem to want to work for me - the program that does the system still dies when the called
program completes.

Ah, I see what you're trying to do. When you call the dspusrprf, you're actually invoking a *CMD object, not an external *PGM object. Have a look at Chapter 16 in this manual for invoking programs;
