You should look at Save Outq from worksright.com .. I have this ,,, and it saves spool file in such a way that an individual report can be restored or backed up to tape or fiche.

You should move your output queue item to the midrange-l list. You'd get a plethora of responses there.

We delete all spool files over 90 days old - no exceptions. We have a daily program that runs and does this. Back in the day there was no built in way in the OS to save spool files so they weren't being saved - items that cannot be saved cannot be critical - therefore spool files were not critical. Relying upon unsafe items being there can hurt. Now, you can change your backup procedures to include spool files but many people don't.

There are APIs out there which will assist you in completing this.

One I would like to have is for spool file ... key in some user name, some OUTQ, and either a cut-off date, or some time-ago ... please delete all spool file reports in the name of user-X in OUTQ-Y which are 2 or more months old. Reason, I have not been able to get the company to include in the training of new employees, CLEAN UP YOUR spool file, to only include what you need to keep, such as reports since last backup, and monthly reference what totals were. So guess who gets to delete them manually by the thousands.
