Jeff

I have run into something similar with respect to notes files & lines of
additional description in the routings. People want to be able to
restructure lines of stuff in BPCS according to evolving changed realities.
You can cut & paste between PC & 400 ... I showed one person how to cut &
paste some info from e-mail to SNDMSG to a co-worker not on e-mail.

I am comfortable with the text manipulation capabilities of SEU PDM & thought
that it might be nice if there was a generic program by some application that
would work as follows:

1. User selects item operation customer order whatever whose notes they want
to restructure.
2. The entire set is copied to a work member in SOURCE format instead of DATA
format, in which the ceiling on the width of each record line agrees with the
width of the line in the notes or additional description or whatever it is
they are redoing.
3. The user then is given access to SEU against that SOURCE format to change
it to what they want instead.
4. During the SOURCE manipulation, the user would not have access to line
numbers.
5. When they take the command to end the effort, up would pop a screen saying
how much ROOM is available in the target ... so for example if they are doing
operation 200 of additional description & the next operation is 250, then
there are only 49 lines that can go in ... and how many LINES they now have
created, and state the obvious of whether it will fit, then if it will, what
is the maximum spacing of the numbers that also fits ... in other words the
user gets to say to number these lines 201 202 203 etc. by ones or 202 204
206 by twos or whatever will fit up to the ceiling & the user selects one or
two or three or whatever
6. The old text data lines that were copied, are now replaced by the source
lines resulting from the user text editing.

I have not in fact written any such software, but you might look at how
BPCSDOC is accessed via the DOC menu as a model of what is possible.
