Did you check sequence #s vs. transaction dates BEFORE INV9 end month
ie. to confirm the mess you now see was not there all along?

It is a common misconception that sequence #s are supposed to match 
transaction dates.  In a testing environment you may have people deliberately 
doing same transactions using a diversity of dates to verify Y2K compliance, 
so that you would reasonably expect dates all over the map with adjacent 
sequence numbers.
