Vincent:

The key difference between BPCS CDE and BPCS CD is that SSA added extra
fields to the CDE database and new logic in multi-currency calculations to
implement triangulation. Essentially, any file that participates in a
multi-currency calculation (most financial transaction files) got extra
fields added to enable the BPCS multi-currency calculation to perform the
currency conversion using the prescribed method of "converting through
euro" if the user desires.

In BPCS CD (and earlier versions of BPCS) for example, the Accounts Payable
header (APH) file, the traditional multi-currency fields which comprise the
"Amount Currently Outstanding" on an invoice are:

APCOUT - Amount currently outstanding (transaction currency)
ABOCNF - Recgnition rate (the exchange rate between transaction and base
currencies)
ABCOUT - Amount currently outstanding (base currency)

In BPCS CDE, SSA added additional fields that now take part in the
calculation of converting the amount from thransaction to base currency.
In the case of APH, these new fields are:

PHOCN2 - Recognition rate divisor
PHCMTR - Conversion method

Note that this approach was taken for all multi-currency processing
throughout BPCS CDE which meant that many files were altered and much
program logic changed.

Some points to consider when evaluating a move to BPCS CDE:

1. Triangulation is only helpful in a instance where BOTH the transaction
and base currencies are NOT euro. If either the transaction or base
currency is euro, then there is no benefit to triangulating. With full
adoption of the euro due to be complete by the end of this year along with
the fact that many companies have already converted to euro (suggesting
that the "transaction currency side" of the calculation may already be
euro), there is a limited and diminishing advantage to implementing
triangulation for the remainder of this year. Put simply, as of January 1,
2002, there will be no reason to have a triangulation capability in the
software and the fields and logic added to BPCS CDE to handle triangulation
will essentially be "junk".

2. Most companies have decided that rounding errors that come from not
triangulating are negligible and tend to offset themselves. Some companies
have quantified their own impact of not triangulating down to the 10s or
100s of euro as a probable rounding error. Thus, most companies have
decided not to bother with triangulation again realizing that any error
will disappear after full adoption of the euro in 2002.

3. If you have modified or custom programs that are built around the
traditional BPCS multi-currency calculation model (represented by the group
of 3 fields above) , you may have to rework those programs to now take into
account the new fields added for the SSA-styled triangulation method.
Realize that SSA changed every program even reports and inquiries that come
into contact with multi-currency fields. Your own programs or queries that
involve multi-currency will likewise have to be changed.

4. As you probably already know, the true and necessary project that every
company currently operating with an "in" currency must complete before 2002
is to convert its base operating currency to the euro. This is called the
"Big Bang" and realistically requires the use of special conversion
programs. Realize that this conversion requirement and process has nothing
to do with triangulation. Your company will need to do a Big Bang whether
you stay on BPCS CD Rel 02 or whether you move to BPCS CDE. Put another
way, since the only real difference between CD and CDE is the triangulation
capability, and because triangulation has nothing to do with the Big Bang,
there is no advantage to moving to BPCS CDE in order to accomplish your
base currency conversion.

5. While the preceding four points are clear and tight facts about BPCS
CDE, this point is more speculative. There are very few BPCS CDE customer
installations in comparison to BPCS CD sites. I have heard indirectly that
because CD has a broader audience it gets more attention from SSA. An
interesting question to ask before implementing CDE is whether all of the
fixes that have been applied to BPCS CD are automatically applied to CDE
and whether both releases are kept at the same PTF level. I suspect the
answer is no. Perhaps someone listening from SSA can clear this up.

To sum things up, BPCS CDE is really only useful if you absolutely need
triangulation. And it might even be disruptive especially if SSA's
alteration of the long-standing BPCS multi-currency calculation will have
impacts on your custom code or reports. The real euro necessity, base
currency conversion can be accomplished with or without CDE.

Our company provides highly-rated, premium grade euro conversion software
for BPCS that will operate on any BPCS version from 3.0 all the way to 6.1
as well as BPCS CD and CDE. In the end, it may well be simpler and less
expensive for you to do a Big Bang conversion on your current CD version
than to perform an upgrade to CDE that provides little or no addtional
benefits.

Best of luck to you in your evalution.

Has anyone any experience or comments on:-

* Migrating from BPCS CD REL02 to 'BPCS CDE' (Euro Enabled Version)

* Running 'EUR for CDE' the Euro Data Conversion Utility - to convert
the CDE database from the previous National Base Currency to new Base
Currency Euro.

Any feedback would be welcome.

Thanks, Vincent
