If you would like to archive that data instead of deleting it forever (don't
count on being able to easily restore the data from pre-purge tapes - it's a
real pain...), check out http://www.arctools.com .  It will add archiving to
the existing purge program without programming.  Or, you can use it instead
of the regular purge program to purge and/or archive records.
